WHISTLER

A radiofrequency electromagnetic signal sometimes generated by lightning discharges. This signal apparently propagates along a geomagnetic line of force, and often "bounces" several times between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Its name derives the sound heard on radio receivers.
