A marked disturbance in the normal state of the atmosphere. The term has various applications, according to the context. It is most often applied to a disturbance in which strong wind is the most prominent characteristic. It is also used for other types of disturbances, including thunderstorms, rainstorms, snowstorms, hailstorms, duststorms, sandstorms, magnetic storms, etc.
