In general, any radio interference detectable as noise in the audio stage. At broadcast frequencies, most naturally induced static is caused by nonperiodic electromagnetic radiation emitted by lightning discharges acting as huge antennae; it is also known as atmospherics. Aircraft radio communication is often hindered by precipitation static due to discharges from the aircraft's surfaces.
